California High School Exit Examination
California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) is designed to improve pupil competency in public high schools. CASHSEE is designed to ensure grade standard comprehension and abilities in reading, writing and Mathematics, in pupils who graduate from public high schools. Identification of pupils with fewer skills essential for future after high school is another task performed by CAHSEE. CAHSEE also ensures that districts pay sufficient attention to these pupils in helping them develop these skills during the high school years. To earn a high school diploma in California, meeting the criteria set by CAHSEE and other local and state requirements is a necessity.
Exam Pattern
Initially CAHSEE was introduced to the ninth grade. However, in a little while CAHSEE was made available only for student of grade 10th and above.
The CAHSEE tests one's skills in two parts:
- English-language arts (ELA)
- Mathematics
The ELA part is composed of assessment tests for reading and writing skills. Reading section comprises:
- Vocabulary,
- Decoding,
- Comprehension, and
- Analysis of information and literary texts.
Writing section is composed of following:
- Writing strategies,
- Applications,
- Grammar,
- Spelling, and
- Punctuation.
Mathematics section of the CAHSEE carries out assessment of equivalent education to grades six and seven. CAHSEE Mathematics also assesses knowledge and understanding of Algebra I. The assessment typically comprises:
- Statistics,
- Data analysis and probability,
- Number sense,
- Measurement and geometry,
- Mathematical reasoning, and
- Algebra.
Evaluation and assessment seek demonstration of strong computational and arithmetic skills including experience of working with decimals, percents and fractions.
Students have to retake CAHSEE as long as all ELA and Mathematics tests are passed. A student can reappear twice in 11th grade and five times in 12th grade for a failed test. Adult students can take CAHSEE thrice every school year till all ELA and Mathematics tests are passed. Students reappear for failed papers only.
Test variations are available to students whereby there is room for modification and accommodation in the exam assessment. An accommodation is a little variation in the assessment process which does not change what the CAHSEE exam aims to measure. A provision for waiver to allow students with modifications to pass their exams by scoring equivalent marks.
