About the GED:
GED stands for General Education Development, an exam developed in the United States and available for all adults who want an equivalent of a high school diploma. The test measures the skills and knowledge similar to a high school course of study. GED tests/exams are meant for only those individuals who do not have a high school diploma. ACE (American Council on Education) is the sole developer of this test. There is no provision for an online test and thus is always taken in person. One who meet the passing score requirements gets either "Certificate of General Educational Development" or similarly titled credential by the jurisdictions. This certificate or credential is highly regarded by both colleges and employers. Every year, hundreds of thousands of adults earn their GED titles which they use to get jobs, earn promotions or qualify for higher education or training. Employers throughout the nation offer the same benefits, wages and opportunities to GED graduates as they offer to standard high school graduates.
Eligibility:
Following are the eligibility requirements set by ACE for this test:-
- a) Any adult who meets the jurisdiction's criteria for residency can take the
test in that state/province/territory/other jurisdiction.
- b) A person who either holds a traditional high-school diploma or has already earned a
GED is not eligible to take this (GED) test. But a person who has either high-school equivalency diploma or has earned scores sufficient to qualify for a high-school equivalency diploma is eligible for retest under certain conditions.
- c) A candidate who is enrolled in an accredited high school, whatever it may be, is not allowed to take this
test.
- d) One must be 16 years of age in order to take this
test. However there may be additional requirements to be fulfilled in case candidate is a minor. Also
GED eligibility varies from state to state.
Subjects covered in the Test:
The test comprises of five subjects namely
- a) Language Arts, Writing - Part I and Part II
- b) Social Studies
- c) Science
- d) Language Arts, Reading
- e) Mathematics
Each of the five subjects uses a multiple choice questions format. Also, every candidate must complete a timed essay on an assigned topic in order to pass the GED test.
Number of Questions and Time Limit of each subject is mentioned in the following table:
Subjects Number of Questions Time limit
(In minutes)
Language Arts, Writing
Part - I 50 75
Part - II 01 45
Social Studies 50 70
Science 50 80
Language Arts, Reading 40 65
Mathematics 50 90
Language Arts: Writing
Part I - This part covers sentence structure, organization, usage and mechanics. Test takers need to read text from business, informational and instructional publications and then to correct, revise or improve it according to Edited American English Standards.
Part II - This part requires the student to write an essay on an assigned topic. Test takers may utilize their time saved in Part - I for essay writing. There is no minimum word limitation for the essay but it must have well focused main points, clear organization, specific development of ideas, control of sentence structure, punctuation, grammar, word choice and spelling. One thing is sure that Assigned topics do not require special knowledge.
Social Studies
This portion of the test focuses on American history, World history, Civics and Government, Economics and Geography. In this section, there will be short passages and test takers need to answer multiple-choice questions. Some passages may come from documents like the Declaration of Independence and/or U.S. Supreme Court decisions. Graphs, charts, and other images may be used in many questions along with written passages. Practical documents, such as tax forms, voter-registration forms, and workplace and personal budgets are used to prepare questions for Civics and Government, and Economics. Topics like global warming and environmental law are also covered.
Science
Science section covers questions on life science, earth and space science, and physical science. It helps the examiner to understand the candidate's skill in understanding, interpreting, and applying science concepts to visual and written text from academic and workplace contexts. The focus of the test is to enable the test-taker to think like scientifically literate person. Questions address the National Science Education Content Standards and focus on environmental and health topics and science's relevance to everyday life. One may expect to see tables, graphs, charts, and diagrams, as well as complete sentences in the questions based on the topics like photosynthesis, weather and climate, geology, magnetism, energy, and cell division.
Language Arts: Reading
This test examines the ability of test-taker to read and understand English texts similar to those of high-school. Five fiction and two nonfiction passages of about 300-400 words long form part of this section. The passages are followed by the questions that test the ability of the test taker to read the comprehension, analyze it, apply the information given to other situations, and synthesize new ideas from those provided. However these questions do not put the burden on test takers to be familiar with the larger piece of literature from which the excerpt is taken, the author's other works, literary history, or discipline-specific terms and conventions. The fiction passages comprise a play, three pieces of prose and a poem. The nonfiction passages may come from any of the following:
- Letters,
- Biographies,
- Newspaper
- Magazine articles
- Manuals and
- Forms.
Mathematics
This section of the test has two parts - both are equally weighted, the first allows the candidates to use calculators and the second forbids their use. Test-takers can use the calculators issued at the testing center only and no other calculators are allowed. Out of the 50 questions, 40 are multiple-choice and the other 10 use an alternate format, requiring the test-taker to record answers on either a numerical or coordinate-plane grid. Both parts of the section have questions of both types. A page of common formulas as well as directions for completing the alternate-format items and using the calculator will be highlighted on the test booklet.
The four main Mathematical disciplines that are covered in this section are: Number operations and number sense, Measurement and geometry, Data analysis, probability, and statistics, Algebra, functions, and patterns.
No GED Tests Online
It is to reassert that all official GED Tests cannot be taken online. One can take the GED Tests almost anywhere in the United States and Canada and internationally at any of the 3400 official GED Testing Centers. Testing centers are mainly adult-education centers, community colleges, and public schools. Students in metropolitan areas may choose from several nearby testing locations.
These Centers are controlled environments. Testing Sessions are organized according to a set of rules, with enforcement of security measures and take place in person. There may be breaks in between the tests but it depends on that how many tests are being administered in a session. There are certain restrictions on the stuff carried by a candidate into the testing room.
Also, in order to put control on cheating, there are approximately 25 different editions of the GED Tests that may be in circulation. This measure thwarts any attempts to cheat during the course of the examination. All the different editions of the GED test are calibrated to the same level of difficulty.
Cost (Fees)
The test takers pay for the cost of the test from no charge in some states of America to as much as $80 in others. They are to check with their State, Province or Territory's contact person for GED testing or their local official GED Testing Center to find out about how to register for testing.
Students with disabilities
If a candidate is disabled and wants to take the GED Test, then he may be entitled to receive reasonable testing accommodations. Since different forms are there for different types of disabilities so the candidate must get the appropriate form from the Testing Center and get the disability documented by a qualified professional. Once the candidate returns the completed form, it is analyzed and if approved, the examiner conducts the testing with approved accommodations. These accommodations are provided at no extra charge.
Audiocassette tests, Braille or large-print tests, Vision-enhancing technologies, Use of video equipment, Use of a talking calculator or abacus, Use of a sign-language interpreter, Use of a scribe (a person who writes down the test-taker's answers), Extended testing time are some of the accommodations that can be approved by the candidate.
Test at once or in sections
Every state lays down its own rules regarding the GED exam. In some states, it is required to take the entire exam in one day. Whereas in other states, the laws are more flexible and one can take the individual sections bit by bit, as he/she feel ready for him. There are some states that require the candidate to take the exam over two-day period. One must contact ACE to discover his/her own state's laws.
Passing the GED Test
In order to pass the GED Tests, an examinee must have combined passing score of 2250; in addition, each individual subject area test score must be 410 or greater.
- Maximum Score: 800
- Minimum Score: 200
A score of 800 puts the student in the top 1% of graduating high school seniors.
If a student passes one or more but not all five tests, he or she need only to retake the test(s) not passed. Most places limit the number of times students may take each individual test within a year: a student may have to wait for a period before being allowed to retake a failed test. There may be an additional fee also to be paid for such retest.
The state/province or territory (which the candidate is a resident of) issues the GED credential of the candidate.
New 2012 Series GED Tests & Testing Deadlines
Anyone who is currently testing or planning to test GED before the release of the next test series on January 1, 2012 MUST complete and pass the entire test (all five subjects) before December 31, 2011. Those who do not complete and meet the minimum passing standards in the 2002 series before this date will have to complete and pass all areas again in the 2012 Series GED Tests in new format and as per new course curriculum.
The 2012 Series GED Tests are an updated version of the GED Tests based on knowledge and skills of today's high school seniors. Since the 2002 Test Series and 2012 Test Series formats are different, a student cannot combine his score of old format with the new one. In case of certain unfinished papers, the candidate will have to take all the tests again in the new format.
