College Level Examination Program (CLEP) allows one to get college credits for what one already knows. These examinations test an individual's knowledge (college level) attained through course work, independent study, travel, cultural pursuits, special interests, military service schools and professional development. International and home-schooled students are also offered opportunities to earn their undergraduate degree.
These college credits can be earned by securing qualifying scores for any of the 34 examinations conducted. Approximately 2900 colleges and universities across the world provide CLEP degree in different courses. Most of the exams are 90 minutes long and are available at $ 70 for each exam. These exams are available for free to U.S. Military personnel and Veterans. Different numbers of credits are attached to each paper and usually span over a period of a semester or two. Language courses such as German, French, and Spanish carry 12 credits.
CLEP exams are conducted at around 1500 exam centers across United States and internationally. Some of these test centers are at military units as well. An administrative or registration fee is charged per test and it varies across different centers.
CLEP Exam Pattern
Most of these CLEP exams have typically multiple choices questions in nature. However, some other exams can have fill-in or ordering sections as well. CLEP English exam has an essay section as well. Multiple choice tests are usually marked against a total of 20-80 marks. Most of the colleges usually award credits for a score of 50 or above, however, it again varies across different colleges and universities. Credits for Foreign language tests are determined by one's score in the exam. For instance, a score of 50 can fetch one 8 credits, a score of 62 can fetch 12 credits and a score of 73 can fetch 18 credits. Typically, the schools determine the number of credits one receives for clearing an exam. American Council for Education has laid down scores sufficient to gain credits for a particular exam/test.
