Dental Admission Test (DAT)
The DAT (Dental Admission Test) is conducted by American Dental Association and has been the benchmark test for admission to Dental Schools. It has been in operation since 1950 and is conducted at numerous Prometric Test Centers throughout the United States. There is an equivalent Dental Admission Test in Canada as well and both these tests are interchangeable. The DAT exam is designed to assess a candidate's academic capability, perceptual ability and ease in comprehension of scientific concepts. All the dental schools require DAT results for assessment of a candidate's potential in pursuing a dental degree. Usually a candidate requires a baccalaureate degree or 3 years of pre-professional degree or 2 years of study of liberal arts to make it to a top dental school. The requirements of different dental schools are different and thus candidates must be aware of the specific requirements of a particular dental school before applying.
Eligibility
- Courses in Biology, general and organic Chemistry as a part of at least one year of college education is a necessity for successful participation in the DAT Program
- Advanced level biology and physics are not required
- Test Scores are relative
- Most applicants complete two or more years of college before taking the test
- Application to Canadian dental schools should discuss the acceptance of the DAT by those schools prior to registering for the test
- Special permission is required for examinees appearing for 3rd retest
- To retake the test, a candidate has to wait for a period more than or equal to 90 days
- DAT also caters to a provision for people with disabilities
- Language barrier issues do not fall under disability and hence there's no accommodation for this

The DAT is administered at numerous Prometric centers all through the United States, its territories including Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and in Canada.
