Overview of GRE General Test: |
| What is GRE? |
| The GRE is Graduate Record Examination. It is a multiple-choice admission test intended for those who want to apply for graduate schools. |
| What it measures? |
| With this Test, verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing skills (not related to any specific field of study) of the applicant are measured. |
- Verbal Reasoning: – This part of the test is designed to measure the test taker’s ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it. In addition, it also measures the candidate’s ability how to analyze the relationships among the component parts of sentences and recognize relationship between words and concepts.
- Quantitative Reasoning: - In this part of the test the understanding of basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra and geometry along with data analysis is tested. The test also includes the measuring of the skills of the test taker’s ability to solve problems based on quantitative reasoning and quantitative setting.
- Analytical Writing: - This part of the GRE test includes measuring the skills like articulating the complex ideas clearly and effectively, examination of claims and associated evidence and how to support ideas with relevant reasons and examples. In addition to these, the ability of a test taker how to sustain a well focused and coherent discussion is also tested along with the controlling capacity of the elements of standard written English.
|
| Who Applies for it and Why? |
| Prospective graduate applicants apply for the General Test. The scores obtained in these tests are used by admissions or fellowship panels to supplement undergraduate records and other qualifications for graduate study. These scores help in comparing the qualifications of applicants and in evaluating their grades and recommendations. |
| When & Where can People take this Test? |
| The General Test is offered year-round at computer-based test centers in the U.S., Canada, and many other countries. It is offered at paper-based test centers in areas of the world where computer-based testing is not available. |
| Who uses the Test Scores obtained by applicants? |
| Any accredited graduate, business or professional school, or any department or division within a school, may require or recommend that its applicants take the General Test. Once these test scores are approved by the GRE Board, any institution seeking accreditation can use these test taker’s scores. |

Test Content and Structure |
| Computer-Based General Test Content and Structure |
Content: |
This Test has three sections mainly – Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing Sections. In addition to this, one unidentified unscored section may also be included in the test, the answers of which of course are not counted in the scores but are helpful for possible use in future tests.
The Analytical Section always appears first in the test where two types of task will be there. First is Issue task where two topics will be there and student needs to attempt only one. And second is Argument task where no choice will be there. Student needs to write on the given topic only. All other sections (Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and unidentified unscored section) may appear in any order. But it is advisable to student to treat all sections as they are counted towards the score. |

| Modified Versions of Verbal and Quantitative Questions |
It is suggested to every student to read the question carefully. It happens sometimes that a question appears to be similar to a question already seen by the student before may in fact be a different question and may also have a different correct answer. Actually this test may include questions that are either modified versions of published questions or questions already published in previous tests. So a student needs to pay careful attention to the wordings of each question as it appears in the test.
Investigations are going on related to feasibility of reusing questions already published in GRE Practice materials and one may see questions from these materials on a test he/she takes.
