Consider two objects of masses m1 and m2. If the objects collide with each
other then there are two possibilities: (i) elastic collision and (ii) inelastic collision. And the
coefficient of restitution or COR of an object is defined as the
fractional value representing the
ratio of velocities before and after an impact:
where V1f and V2fare final velocities of the objects after impact and V1 and V2 are the initial velocities of the considered objects before impact.
(i) Elastic collision:
During the elastic collision the total kinetic energy of
the system before and after collision are same.
In addition, the linear momentum is also conserved.
Hence,
And coefficient of restitution for perfectely elastic collision is e= 1
