Work & Energy:

Work and energy are closely related to each other. Sometimes work and energy both are treated equal. And, work is roughly force times distance. However, in a more precise manner, it is given as:

Energy is usually defined as the capacity to do work. It is a scalar physical quantity and is conservative in nature. Its unit is Joule in SI system of units. The unit of work and energy are same.

Work done by a Constant Force:

A force can be constant or variable in nature. If a constant force is acting on an object making an angle with the horizontal then the work done by the force is given as the dot product of the force (F) and distance (d):

When the applied force is perpendicular to the displacement then the work done is zero. For example, the work done by the force of gravity on an object is zero. The sign of work done depends upon the direction of F relative to d. For example, when an object is lifted the work done by the gravitational force is negative. However, the value of cosine of the angle between the force and displacement takes care of the sign.
