There are various applications of simple harmonic motion. They are described as follows:
1- Simple Pendulum: The simple pendulum is another mechanical system which exhibits periodic motion. It is as shown in the figure.
For the simple pendulum as shown in the figure, the acceleration is given as:
As the angle is assumed to be very small we can write,
This implies that the acceleration of the simple pendulum is directly proportional to its displacement showing that the motion is simple harmonic in nature. Now, the time period of oscillation of the simple pendulum is given by,
Thus the time period of oscillation of simple pendulum only depends upon the length of the string and the acceleration due to gravity.
