Interference of Waves: |
 |
| |
It is the phenomenon which occurs when two waves meet while traveling along the same medium so that they result in a wave having a resultant displacement equal to the algebraic sum of the individual displacements of the waves taking part in interference. When the two waves move in same direction so that the resulting displacement is the sum of the individual displacements then the type of interference is called constructive interference. If the resulting displacement is equal to the difference of the individual displacements then the type of interference is called destructive interference.

Interestingly, the meeting of two waves along a medium does not alter the individual waves or even deviate them from their path.
